R.E.M.成立于1980年，他们是在美国的Georgia州的Athens城组建的，当时Bill、Mike和Michael都是Georgia州立大学的学生，而Peter 则在当地一家名叫Wuxtry唱片店里工作。当Peter在这家唱片店工作 时，认识了经常来买唱片的Michael，他在同他的两个姐姐（Lynda和Cindy） 一起时，还显得很文静，但在他寻找一些难得见到的vinyl B-sides 唱片时，共同的音乐爱好使他们相识交谈并成为了好友，后来他们就搬到Oconee大街上的一个废弃的教堂里住在一起，而在此同时，Mike 和Bill也收拾好乐器进入Attens的UGA.大学............更多点这里
